5th gear started to grind, crunch, whirr when I decelerated at slip road this morning. All other gears are fine but makes noise when changing from 4th to 5th and releasing clutch. All noises go away when foot on accelerator. Something to do with retaining ring? allowing 5th to move too much so touching other moving parts? I was that fed up I didn’t really pay attention to what he was saying. It’s an ASU cable change box in a Rallye. [

] Any ideas? Been told to check oil levels or change first as its the easy check.
First drain the old oil and see if it contains more metal than the usual grey christmas tree on the drain plug magnet, if its normal try an oil change using a quality synthetic oil, capacity is 1H motorcode (Rallye)
02C cablechange box code up to ASU 28059 1.9 liters.
02C front transfer box Code up to ASU 28059 0.5 liter.
however its more than likely that the old oil and drain plug are full of metal (either steel or alluminium from the casing) and it will need investigating further, luckily you can do everything on 5th gear apart from change the shafts just by removing the end plate and without removing the gearbox.
It turned out to be a broken 5th gear selector fork, 02A 311 562A. I presume the gearbox doesn’t have to come out to change this part?
