ParticipantHi guys,
I know the 20vt conversions have been documented to death (I’ve done one myself) but I’m doing another one now, this time on my syncro. I’ll be using the full Audi S3 running gear – engine, 02m box, haldex etc.
I’ve got the 02m gearbox mount from Dutchbuild which fits great. The thing I’m not sure on at the moment is whether I should use the syncro rear engine mount? I’ve fitted the engine into the mk2 and it seems as though the syncro rear engine mount is a little short. It seems like it’s sitting further back on the engine side. It could do with moving forward a centimetre or two. I presume the syncro mount has to be used as it’s the correct shape for the position of the transfer box? BTW I’m using the golf’s subframe.
In my previous conversion I just used an ABF rear engine mount, but this was a FWD car so it was more straight forward.
Any advice will be appreciated.

ModeratorIs your mount from an 020 or 02C type box? possibly you need the 02C type?

ParticipantHi Chris, the previous gearbox was an 020. was the rear engine mount different on the 02c engines?

Moderatoryes its different, its not so much the rubber mount itself, but the bracket that goes from the back of the engine to the rubber mount.

Participanthave you cut the mount off subframe gearbox side then moved it back and rewelded it on?

ParticipantNo…just bolted it on for now. I didn’t really understand why it had to be cut and moved as it all bolted up ok…but i guess it’s to move it back. DOH! Tthanks for the replies guys, I think I know what I need to do now
I’ll start a build thread when i get time to upload all the pics

ParticipantPs any idea if there are longer starter motor bolts that usually support the front mount? The ones on the 02m gearbox weren’t designed with a front mount in mind so don’t have enough thread poking through on the engine side.

ParticipantThanks for the reply mate. Engine is now fitted and sits nice and square. Only problem is that I tried to connect the prop shaft and the donut is touching the steering rack [xx(] Do I need to raise the engine?

ParticipantHmm…looks like engine needs to come forward by about 1/2 inch. Would the rear engine mount from the 02c be longer than from the 020? I know some passat mounts were slightly longer but not sure they’ll work for the 4×4 setup.
