Hi guys.
Got a bit of a strange tapping noise coming from the rear end of my G60 Syncro. It happens when slowing down and gets slower as the speed comes down. Only happens when warm though, and if you press the brake it seems to get louder (amplifying it through the hub maybe?) but if you pull on the hand brake it seem to fade away.
I have also tried disconnecting the pipe for the diff controller (stopping it from disengaging when the throttle’s closed) but that didn’t make any difference.
Any ideas?
Anyone know of any one who specialises in these diffs?
While it is difficult to give an accurate on line diagnosis, I would suggest that rather than immediately suspecting the rear diff,
You may find is more likely to be either a UJ on the drive shaft, a partial handbrake seizure on a caliper, or a wheel bearing, the actual rear diffs are normally quite reliable and usually either work or internally explode,
As for a diff specialist, you are better replacing it with a (known to work)second hand one as the cost of rebuilding/revising is prohibitive.
I’ve checked the brakes over and all seems well and i’ve also stripped checked and rebuilt the c.v.’s and all seemed fine there too. I’m not convinced the fault is with the diff my self but i’m at a bit of a loss as to what it might be. It isn’t a serious noise but i’d rather try and sort it before anything fails.
