Please Note, This information only relates to the Golf 2 Syncro as the 1.8 Golf 3 Syncro does not have the caliper carrier mounting lugs, only the Golf 3 VR6 has them.

As stated below the most fiddly part is grinder cutting off the old drum backplates, you can remove the hub instead but then you will need new wheel bearings, the necessary caliper carrier mounting holes are already drilled & tapped in the swing arm you just bolt the carrier to them and your away [;)]

    Upgrade 2
Replace rear drums with 239×10 discs, this is not as quite as simple as upgrade 1, but it is without to many problems, the replacement disc part no 811 615 301, this is actually the same disc as fitted to the golf 2 1.05L front wheels!
The calipers are part no 535 615 423x left and 424x right and are the same as fitted to the rear on a gti 16v and most other vw rear disc applications of this era,
The caliper carriers are part nos 191 615 425a left and 426 right, and have been fitted to all car type rear disc syncros 1985 to 1998 thats golf, passat, vento and jetta, the awkward jobs on this conversion are cutting off the drum brake backplates, and lengthening the outer or shortening the inner handbrake cable, this is the rear disc conversion as fitted to my car.

My new conversion uses mk 4 aluminium calipers which are lighter & have a better(non seizing)handbrake mechanism

    This may also help.

Hey Chris is the drum to disc for the MK3 syncro straight foward? I was told by Ed @ ecode that Audi 4000 carriers would work. I am trying to get an idea for what parts to keep around.. thanx

sorry its not the same as the Golf 2 Syncro, you will need a pair of G3 Syncro vr6 triangles, as for caliper carriers, as I dont think the Audi 4000 ones are suitable, you could check with Les about this.

    Hey Chris!

I’ll be looking to fit rear discs to my Syncro during the conversion. One bit I wasn’t sure about was whether I need to use the mk4 carriers for the mk4 caliper or if it’s the mk2 carrier with mk4 caliper?

And is it still the 1.05l disc that is used?

    Cheers,
    Kav

yes, its the mk 2 SYNCRO carrier on the mk 4 caliper, & also yes its with the 239 X 10 1.05 Disc or with spacers the 239 X 12 1300 disc

    see above links

btw. The 2wd 226mm rear brake setup is NOT compatable with the with the Syncro 239mm rear disc brakes

Thank you for your fast reply – as ever!

Am I able to fit the ABS ring to the disc and if so, is there a way of getting the sensor to mount in the right place?

    Thanks,
    Kav

The ABS ring does not fit onto the disc, it over the outer CV joint inside the hub.

Thanks Chris – what about the sensor – is there a hole for it on the standard syncro setup?

Some hubs have, some dont, you will have to check if yours does.

    Hello,

many thanks for all these informations.

Can someone tell me if the brake cable of a syncro drum system is enought long?

If I have well understand, all the system( caliper + caliper carriers) from a golf 2(rallye) or vento(vr6) or passat(vr6) syncro with rear disc works ?
And the best is to keep caliper carriers from one of these and change the caliper by a MK4 in aluminium to avoid sticking problemes.

    many thanks
