Whilst bombing down the outside of the M25 the other night[:p], the bearing in the propshaft carrier decided to give up the ghost! I thought the car was going to shake itself to bits[:0]

Can I just replace the bearing on this or does it come with the carrier as one, assuming it is still available through VW? If I can just replace the bearing, does anyone know what the bearing number is (GKN, Timken or VW)? I think I’ll also replace the rubber Doughnut on the front as it is likely to have been shaken about a bit and could have been damaged.

    Ahh!

It’s the one that sits halfway down the propshaft, halfway between the transfer box and the VC. Does that help?

You have both a front & a rear bearing, nr 14 front & 15 rear

btw, its usually the front one that goes, due to the heat from the cats

I haven’t had time to fix the Country so have sent it off to my local independent VW specialist (C G Cars). I might get it back in time for the alleged ‘Big Snow’!

Bad news[:(] They fixed the bearing, but it turns out the reason it failed is due to the transfer box being b*ggered. We’d noticed when we changed the clutch last year that the transfer box had been repaired at some time and the internals must have been damaged and have finally given up the ghost[:(!]

Also the bearing mountings had gone but they can’t get a replacement bush. Does anyone know if they are still available somewhere?

    Chris,

Change of plan. As I’m having trouble sourcing and then getting the time to pick up a Mk3 TDi Syncro I’ve decided to replace the transfer box and then keep a look out for a Mk3. Do you still have that Transfer Box? What about shipping, is that going to be a bit expensive?

Let me know how much you want for it.

Yes, no probs I still have it here, in fact its the last 020 gearbox part I have

I think it must be worth 60 euros including the paypal charges & packing,

I can send up to 10 kilos to the UK for 25 eu, & up to 20 k for 34 eu. have a look here

I will check the weight tomorrow & see what the postage costs are.
