Hi all
I am after a little help with my mk 2 golf syncro, It won’t engage 4 wheel drive, I think it must be an issue with the freewheel system in the rear diff or vacuum issue. I dont have any reversing lights also, I have tried another gearbox switch but this has not solved the problem. Must be relay or wiring issue. As I understand it the reversing light issue wont affect 4 wheel drive in forward motion. When we had all the snow earlier in the year I traced the power wire to the rear diff solenoid and wired it up to a power source to make the diff engage as it would in reverse and the 4 wheel drive worked fine so the viscous coupling seems ok. This is my first syncro and I have to say that I was very surprised and impressed with how well it worked in the snow. Had loads of fun!
I would however like to get it working properly now as I am going to sell her.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Matt
It might be the relay, P/N 191 957 917A
This is in position 18 on the relay box up to 1989
& in position 15 from 89/90 on
or it could be the power in to the gearbox reverse switch.
Thanks for the reply Chris, Ill check out the relay etc, I take it this is regarding the lack of reversing lights and 4 wheel drive in reverse. This won’t affect 4 wheel drive in forward will it?
Is the lack of 4 wheel drive in forwards likely to be a freewheel issue?
Matt
Yes thats correct, but it could be that your Viscous Coupling has failed. [xx(]
