Does anyone know if the standard cable can be modified to fit the syncro with drum brakes. Tried the dealers using Chris’ part numder but they tell me it has been discontinued.
I just phoned the dealers and unfortunately there are non left anywhere within VW, you could try VW classic parts though

if you ask them nicely they might be able to give you the names of some dealers who were on the system as having them in stock. they might not still be there, but it’s worth a try, that’s how i got mine. i think i also saw some on ebay the other day, might be worth looking on ebay.de too.

My partsman does that automatically for me on all deleted parts, and unfortunately in this case there are none left anywhere

The problem with ebay.de is that about 1/2 the time the seller (inc Company sellers) list parts as suitable for the Syncro when they are not, you need to check very carefully, as if they are wrong then its a long way to return them (at your own expense)
I agree Chris , I did see cables listed on Ebay.de but I doubted they were correct as they were listed for other models also.
The G2 Syncro drum brake cables are 1580mm
The G2 2WD drum brake cables are 1535mm, 45mm too short
The 2WD G3 drum brake cables are 1495, 85mm to short
The G3 Syncro drum & disc brake cables are 1592mm, 12mm or 1/2 an inch longer than the original ones,
I think that these may be the ones to go for,
p/n 1H0 609 721B for drum brakes
or
p/n 1H0 609 721C for disc brakes [
]I would suggest getting 2 of them while you are there as the other side will be not far short of breaking, especially when the new cable stresses it a bit more than it has been.
Ok, I need some new hand brake cables for my Golf Country. Are these the same as the Syncro or Rallye cables or are they different? I can’t access my parts list at the moment, so was hoping someone might know the part numbers or the length so I can find an alternative if they are no longer available.
Or would I be better off converting them to rear discs using later calipers? Seems a bit of an expensive route just to replace the cables!
Country H/brake cables P/N 191609721J they are 1641mm long and are available from Volkswagen Classic parts
