Memberweird issue in transfer case the input will not spin the output
Drawing 1

I did not have in my case part 24/25/26/27/28 the axle cup was only heald on by #17 with no bolt, I also notice that when I turned the output shaft it would not spin the pinion gear, what drives the pinion assemby as there is no internal splined connection between the the pinion assembly and the shaft. I would think that the parts I am missing somehow effect this but it still seems like it should have a keyway to keep the two parts turning together.
Any help is appriciatedOctober 13, 2009 at 5:08 pm #6438Chris S
ModeratorThe rear drive flange spins independently and is driven by a splined collar `Muff` directly from the rear diff.

so here is the outpput shaft of the tarnsfer case part number 15 and the axle cup how does it turn the pinion gear since the inside of the pinion gear housing is not splined and neither is the shaft do the parts that I am missing tension the shaft and the pinion gear so that the pinion gear turns as the output shaft turns. I was missing parts 23-27 in the upper diagram from my transfer case, and when I pulled the transfer case off I could spin the output shaft but the output flange would not move . I hope my question makes sense

ModeratorIf you mean that when you spin the shaft (p/n 15) that the rear output flange (p/n 9) does not also spin?? that is normal as they are connected at all.
The splined end of the cogwheel in YOUR drawing right next to bearing 13 is connected by an internally splined hollow “Muff” which fits from there directly onto the outer side of the differential carrier and does not drive through the differential planet gears (which only drive the FRONT wheels)
In the drawing below (of an 020 transfer box, but it shows the set up better)the right hand front wheel flange (nr 25) is driven by the solid shaft nr 28, while the rear drive flange is driven direct from the crown wheel carrier nr 1 by the Muff nr 35 to the hollow shaft nr 16.The 02C transfer box works in exactly the same way as the 020 transfer box
Drawing 2

This shows where the muff fits directly onto the differential carrier & so drives completely independently of the drive to the front wheel(s)which is through the planetary gears (differential) [^]

Memberthis is an 02c box the trans will spin the out shaft of the transfer case with out an issue but the pinion gear shaft in the transfer case and the out put shaft have no direct engaugement. The out put shaft and the pinion gear shaft can turn freely from each other. So what i was wondering if the ring in my pictureI took and the parts I am missing lock the two shafts together so that when the output shaft spin the pinion gear shaft spins as well

Yes I know but for this the type 020 is the same.2) the trans will spin the out shaft of the transfer case with out an issue but the pinion gear shaft in the transfer case and the out put shaft have no direct engagement.
They don`t and are not supposed to have.3) The out put shaft and the pinion gear shaft can turn freely from each other.
They are supposed to.4) So what i was wondering if the ring in my picture I took.
please can you take a better picture as is is too blurred to see if you have a Muff fitted.5) The parts I am missing lock the two shafts together so that when the output shaft spin the pinion gear shaft spins as well.
no the `missing´ parts dont lock anything together, what they do is basically stop the drive flange rattling about on the shaft & provide a limited & crude form of diff lock, similar to thisOctober 14, 2009 at 5:29 pm #6446toplessvw
Memberthanks for the info now after looking at it and then looking around the garage I found the muff piece, let me tell you I fell a little dumb when I found it

A sort of “Duh” moment eh? [:o)]
Glad to have been of help, mind you I was dreading asking you if you had a “Muff” [
