Memberhi guys,i’m from italy and i’ve just broken my golf syncro gearbox..the car has 170.000 km and today while i was going in fifth gear i heard a knock and then the speedo turned down to 0km/h and i felt the engine like when i press the clutch…tomottor i’ll se what happened, but i would like to nkow:
i have a complete golf gti mk2 8v gearbox with 15.000 km on it (it’s as brand new)…can i use the case of my syncro and all the internal of this “new” golf gti gearbox?
i have taked a look but the syncro transfer box don’t bolt straight on the fwd gearbox..July 25, 2009 at 8:22 am #6082alexisblades
Memberi was planning on doing this, but i never got the chance to try it out as i’m now going cable change and fitting a rallye gearbox. it looks like it would work, as i believe the internals are the same, apart from the differential. just the bellhousing casting that’s different. but then, the argument was that for the trouble of doing that, you could upgrade to a cable change rallye gearbox, which is stronger. check out german ebay for loads of the bits you would need..

Memberhowever, if you have a really solid rod change box, for the sake of a few gaskets and seals, i’d give it a go.. it would be simpler probably.

ModeratorBy the time you have stripped out two gearboxes & rebuilt them into one (inluding settng all end floats, preloads etc, it is probably just as easy to fit a G60 Syncro gearbox.
but if you are determined to go ahead with your conversion? then the parts you will need from the Syncro gearbox are as follows
1) Bellhousing.
2 Second motion shaft. (pinion shaft)
3) Crownwheel & differential.
4) reversing light switch. You will also need to buy a 16V clutch friction plate, as the splines are different on the 16V input shaft.

Memberright side!

i’m going to present her in readers rides !July 28, 2009 at 1:20 am #6101Chris S
ModeratorWell on the front left hand side a driveshaft from any Golf 2 will fit, but the front right hand side shaft is Syncro specific and not readily available second hand.
