Hey hows it going. I have been looking on here and cant seen to find out what makes the 1H diffrent from the PG engine. I if any one can shed some light on this it will greatly help me importing my Rallye to the US, when the importer asks if the can use a PG part to conform to US Specs. thanks -Jonathan-
The main difference apart from the motor code is that the 1H has 12mm Diesel type headbolts while the PG motor has the standard 11mm bolts as normally fitted to the petrol version, other than that ETKA uses the same part numbers for everything.
Knowing how up on all things VW Chris is, it gives me so much pleasure to correct the last statment.[]
The 1H uses smaller pistons as the PG engine capacity was too big for world rallying in the late 80’s. the the bore and the pistons were smaller by .4mm
PG’s are 1781 cc
1H’s are 1763 cc
won’t make a cacks worth of difference though !!

i read somewhere that they also have stronger webs cast into the block? i could be wrong.
Nice bit of info lads, good to know if I have to pull the head for any reason, or change out the pistons for that matter. So. . . correct me if I am wrong, but does this also mean that I can run a little more boost on the 1H motor seeing how the head bolts are thicker? and what of head gaskets? is there a special 1H head gasket or are all G60 gaskets the same?
Thanks again gents.
Ok, head gaskets are the same, 1H or PG no matter, both use the metal gasket.
I suppose ultimately bigger headbolts would imply greater strength but I’m not sure you will ever boost so high that the headbolt size will become important.
VW made many changes to things for motorsport, some make sense and some not. maybe the bigger head bolts were fitted to reduce the stress on the block…who knows!!
the changes to the 1H engine were to get under a cc limit in rallying and had nothing to do with allowing more boost or improving reliability etc.
Good luck with getting your Rallye into the states.

Thanks mike, good to know. lol I hope all finishes well with my import. it is already here in the states and the DOT portion is done and they are just finishing fitting the cat ant the exh.
