Right chaps, didn’t use the car for a few days and when I returned, the inside of the windows were dripping wet. This is no doubt due to the wet carpets!
At the moment the worst location seems to be the rear RHS footwell. Any idea where this water comes from? It always seems to get wet when the vehicle is standing still. I’ve sat in the car when it has rained and can not see where any of the water is coming from. Even the fabric roof seems to be water tight! There are no stains on any of the seats as left when water leaks onto them.
Does anyone have any idea where this water may be coming in from? Any pointers would be appreciated.
look at the rain tray under bonnet, there are drain holes if they are blocked and it rains the tray fills up with water and then thru open holes on bulk head will drain into car. the other is heater matrix.
Yes but its very difficult for any water from there to run to the back of the car, unless its parked on a hill!
Never having had this problem (fingers crossed) personally I would suggest either door or rear window seals, Sorry I cant be of more help.
Has it got a sunroof? my Scirocco sunroof drains blocked up and filled the footwells with water.
I used an old handbrake cable to poke down, (plastic round the wire prevents scratching!)
Good thinking Mikes, I had forgotten about the sunroof, as my latest G2 Syncro does not have one.
its due to plastic sheeting being missing or ripped behind the door card. if its damaged or ripped the door card get wets then drips down into the car hence making into rear footwell wet.
I wondered about the door seals or the plastic sheeting behind the door card, but I can’t see any water marks where the water had run down, but that does not mean it is not that!
I remember having a similar problem in my other Golf, but that didn’t have a sunroof, so I am coming to the conclusion that it is either the door or the window seals. I shall have to get the hose out and give the car a good soaking whilst sitting inside, once the snow has gone!
The door “vapor barriers” are a notorious trouble spot for all MKIIs, but especially the rear doors on 4-door cars.
Every single 4-door MKII I’ve owned has had this problem, it’s just a matter of taking the door cards off, ripping that old crap off, cleaning all the adhesive crap off the door, and cutting some new plastic to fit. (I use painter’s tarp)
Spray glue is great for sticking it back on!
I’ll check out behind the door cards, when the weather warms up a bit!
you shouldn’t even have to take the door apart to see if the vapor barrier is gone, the bottom of the door card will either be wet, or have water stains on it.
