Is fitting the handbrake cable to a syncro (Rallye) any different to fitting one to a standard MK2 Golf? I know the cable lengths are different but does having syncro specific parts such as propshaft, twin silencer boxes and rear axle carrier pose any problems?
Replacing a Handbrake cable on a Rallye or any Syncro with rear disc brakes for that matter is easier in one respect as you dont have to get brake drums off to fit the cables, but you do have to fiddle the cables round under the heatshields and on the Rallye/Passat Syncro the twin silencer boxes are also a bit in the way.
Thanks Chris. I had new rear calipers on last year. Yesterday I parked on a really steep hill so pulled on the handbrake quite hard. An hour later, there were 2 inches of free travel on the handbrake before it engaged. The calipers however were not stuck on as an hours drive home and the rear discs were cold and the car could be easily pushed in neutral. I left it with handbrake off and I’ve just checked this morning and it all works as it should[
] Perhaps the cable got stuck inside it’s covering, if it has one?
No its more than likely a (99% certain) broken cable, you could try pulling and releasing the handbrake a few times incase the internal caliper adjuster has come unstuck but its really not likely to make any difference.
Suprise, Suprise, it was the internal adjuster/cable, there’s one for the book [
