I had real problems when I tried to refill my rear diff recently, the oil bottle comes with a pull out tube but is almost impossible to fill the diff in situ without most of it ending up on the floor.
Obviously if the rear axle is out then its not such a problem.
My answer was to go to the local pharmacy and ask for the biggest syringe they had.
( Beware!! I got a very odd look as if I was some deranged junkie, and it didn’t help when I tried to explain cos then they then thought I was trying to cover up what I really wanted it for!!!!!!…..dammed perverts!)[:)]
I attached a short length of plastic tube, then the oil was injected in a controlled manner without all the overspill and best of all no complaints from the wife. (about oil on the drive[;)])

Hope this is of some help…

Hi as an add on to the above, with a longer length of tube, the syringe can be used to draw off oil via the dipstick tube if you should overfill the engine oil.

use a modifyed ezi bleed here, as there usless for bleeding brakes loose the cap off the end fill the bottel with gear oil and let it gently squirt it in :)

i used an easybleed the other day but wasn’t sure if the diff was full or not – it would overflow so it looked full, but then if i left it for a minute it would take more oil. there’s a suspicious whining coming from the back of the car, could my rear diff be knackered? oil seems to have been leaking past the driveshaft flange seals..

The rear diff flange seals are not that difficult to replace.

The problem is the input shaft is directly in front of the filling hole, trying to fill it too quickly means the oil hits the shaft, can’t drain into the diff fast enough and comes back out of the filling hole.
The whining could be coming from anywhere, diff, cv joints, wheelbearings, always difficult to diagnose without swapping parts
From what you say it does sound as if the flange seals have gone but might be unrelated to the noise!

you just have to let it trickel in, drain the diff and place a clean bowl under teh diff to catch the oil that spills and just keep putting it back in till it’s had a whole liter
