I have a spare power steering rack I am about to get recon-ed, but looking at the part number on it I am not sure it is the right one? The part number on it is 191 422 055 but I have been told it should be 191-422-061SX I do not want to recon it if it is not the correct rack. Can anyone check this for me please.
Richard
This P/Nr 191 422 055 is for an early Golf 2 power steering rack, it was replaced by 191 422 055R and finally with 191 422 061MX which was then dropped without replacement in 2007
(btw the suffix X denotes an exchange part, which means that your ‘new’ part from VW is actually a reconditioned item)
Research has led me to believe that the only difference between the SX & MX racks is the number of turns lock to lock, the SX version being the so called quick rack which supposedly has less turns lock to lock,
If anyone would like to count the turns lock to lock on their steering racks & post here (complete with model year & left or right hand drive I would be grateful, as we could hopefully sort this question out once and for all, same as we have with the 2 differing rear wheel bearing sizes.
Hi Chris,
I was after this info a while ago. I drove a rallye a while back, which was 2.7 turns lock to lock. All other rallyes/g60’s and rhd mk2s with pas i have driven have all been 3 turns lock to lock.
Maybe the SX version is the 2.7 i once experienced?
I have found some other numbers on the rack, & their might be a D at the end of the number. 9E 8AIV USA XTR these were sort of underneath. Any use? Not good news then, I have an early MK2 golf left hand drive rack. Not sure what to do now. The rack did come off a Rallye?
Yes thats very helpful, it is an TRW rack from VW USA, it did come from a Syncro/Rallye as it was never fitted to any 2WD Golf. []
My original 1988 Golf Syncro had exactly the TRW same rack fitted, after my original Syncro caught fire,
I removed it, and Shinya (G19 on here) is now using it to steer his Golf Syncro around Yokohama in Japan, I will have to ask him how many turns lock to lock he has? []
BTW, it uses entirely different Hydraulic seals & track rods than the ZF type rack and the internal parts are not interchangeable between the two.
Thanks for that Chris, so it is a Rallye rack then. Is their a way I can check the number off turns off the car? Do you think I will have problems getting it recon-ed? Can I buy the parts myself anywhere? I have emailed a few company’s for prices.
Richard
I had my TRW rack reconditioned for 300 eu over here in Holland (7 or 8 yrs ago) I had to find a specialist who appreciated the difference between the TRW & ZF racks.
Let me look in my shed as I think I have a nearly new LHD Syncro power rack in there somewhere.
Hello
I measured, and it took almost 3.0 turns lock to lock.

If you carefully grip the input shaft with locking pliers (Mole grips) then you should be able to count the turns

Not if you can find someone who knows what a TRW rack is,
as for getting the parts yourself, it is difficult as VW dont have all the seals you need
I was correct, I do have a nearly new American made TRW Passat Syncro rack in my shed (only the track rods are a different length but can be swapped out for the Golf ones, or you can fit Passat front triangles & have a wide track conversion)
I checked using the method as suggested in my last post and it came out at just over 3 turns lock to lock, but as already said that is not on the car, I would think it would be 3 turns lock to lock when fitted.
Thanks for the help Chris. I may have found another rack. I will let you know.
Chris, please can you check on another power steering rack part number please. I have been helping a friend do some work on his Rallye & he has the following part number on his rack 192 422 055B XTR USA 22-14 02 OF26A2. It is definitely 192, what do you think?
Its another American made XTR rack so is correct for the Rallye,
other than that I cant find any other info in ETKA.
Thanks Chris, it seems every Rallye rack I see is American XTR, I have not come across 061SX yet.
I find it funny that the PS Rack for the Syncro/Rallye came out of the US, considering they never got either of them.
