Thats about right, and they are always cracked in exactly the same place, I think that VW must have pre cracked them in the factory before they fitted them!
I repaired mine about 3 years ago, I Veed the crack out, then got it as hot as I could before I welded it,
I built a sort of oven, just by stacking bricks which I then filled with barbeque coal bricks and sat the manifold in them
and lit it, I used a paint stripper hot air gun for a forced draught until the manifold was nearly red hot, then I arc welded
it using the correct rods for cast iron, I let it cool slowly over night, before refitting, it has been on the car for over
three years now with no problems.
