Has anyone else got a spare transfer box to sell to Clive?
I have looked in my shed & I can’t find my spare one I thought was there, I will post pics of my shed(s) later, but to say they are full is an gross understatement, so it could just be hiding somewhere in there!
Didn’t manage to check it last night[]
I’ll have a look over the weekend.
B*gg*r! I knew there was something I was supposed to do this weekend!
Ok, I had a look the other day, but it was a bit dark and couldn’t find any markings on it at all! Where is the code? Do I need to crawl underneath to find it?
Its on the bellhousing.
That explains it! I was looking on the body.
Further to the previous, Chris managed to find me a transfer box which I sent off with the vehicle to my local VW friendly garage. However, I got a phone call a couple of days later from the garage who told me that they had taken the transfer box off and there was nothing wrong with it. They suggested it is likely to be the rivets on the diff carrier and would sort it out for me. Anyway a couple more days later and I get another call from the garage. It looks like the gearbox is the problem, so they’ve sent it off to a gearbox specialist.
A couple more days later and another phone call. It looks as if the gearbox is a mess and could take upwards of £600 to repair, can I get a gearbox from somewhere?
Well I’ve found one on ebay, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/G60-2-0-Getriebe-AMF-SYNCRO-VW-Passat-Golf-110Tkm-/120631008778.
Now this is a G60 box and I need a couple of questions answered before I splash the cash;-
1) Will my 125bhp Country engine be able to drive with this gearbox?
2) I assume I have to convert to cable change?
3) Can I still use the clutch cable or do I have to have a hydraulic one?
4) Is there anything else I need to change?
Now this is a G60 box and I need a couple of questions answered before I splash the cash;-
1) Will my 125bhp Country engine be able to drive with this gearbox? Yes
2) I assume I have to convert to cable change? Yes
3) Can I still use the clutch cable or do I have to have a hydraulic one? You can use either, but if you are running a cable clutch you will need 1 of these http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kupplungszug-G60-Umbau-original-VW-Lagerbock-Passat-T4-VR6-Golf-1-/161030729440?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item257e2deee0
4) Is there anything else I need to change? You will need to change the flywheel & Clutch (228mm diameter against 210mm),
also the blocking tinware around the bellhousing, the right hand driveshaft will have to be exchangesd or shortened, if you don’t have 100mm CV joints already you will need to fit them, you will need a 16v GTI speedo as the original one won’t read correctly Speedo cable, there is more as well will post later
Things have moved on!
I managed to get a gearbox from Kav1187 for the same price as the postage for the G60 box[] Thanks Kav!
This is now fitted and I am using the car to work again. Strange the number of comments I’ve had about people missing the car!!!
I now have a few minor issues. First, the speedo is now not reading correct! Whereas before it used to be 71.8km to and from work, the same journey is now 76.6km[?] Do the UK spec gearboxes have a slightly different speedo ratio or is it because the original vehicle the gearbox came from had a 120mph speedo, whereas my speedo is 220kph (137mph)? I am getting better mpg[]
The other issue is probably related to the fact that I hadn’t used the car for 7 months! When I ‘blasted’ down the motorway with the roof open and the fans on full blast (it was hot last week) I got covered in a load of black muck that came out the vents. There is also a lot of thin black foam in the air vents. Anyone know where this comes from?
I now have 2 angle drives in good condition (one with a broken tab) and a cleaned and dismantled gearbox, with a buggered 5th gear. If anyone is interested let me know.
Its good to get back in the old girl, and its a lot better fuel consumption than the Range Rover[:0]. It still blasts up and down the M25 @ *30kph without any fuss.
Oh, and I forgot that the CVs had to be replaced with larger ones as the originals didn’t fit?
The final drive ratio is different on the Country, as is the speedo calibration.
My bet is that you have taken out an(original Golf Country) AXR code gearbox with a 68/14 = 4.85 to 1 diff
(early type with 90mm drive flanges)
& fitted
an ARM code gearbox with a 67/15 = 4.46 diff,
(later type with 100mm flanges)
btw the drive flange diameters are not related to the final drive ratios.
Also the 220 Kmph Country speedo has a drive factor of 1100, the standard 220 Kmph LHD Syncro has a factor of 1080
While the UK RHD Speedo has a factor of 1740.
to add to the confusion there are also 2 different speedo drive cogs which can be fitted to the gearbox end of the cable,
1 has 15 teeth while the other has 16.
So, I’m getting less revs/kph, but due to the drive factors of the speedo, it shows more kms than I’m travelling!
It does sound slightly less strained than before (although it is 7 months since I last drove it) and I think it slows down more on Reigate Hill (for those that don’t know this is a long hill on the M25). Which sounds about right! Now I just need to get another speedo with the correct drive factor!
Anyone have a list of drive factors verses vehicle?

Thats Correct
You need a RHD (Miles) Syncro speedometer & fit in your LHD speedo housing, make sure its the same make, Motometer or VDO.
Just been trolling through ebay for one and there only appears to be 8V GTi 120mph versions with MFA (and a couple of 1.3 versions with clocks)! However, the pictures are not clear enough to see what drive factor they have! Are the 8V GTi ones similar to the Syncro or Country ones?
These appear suitable, apart from getting the MFA to work, but I note that some quote ‘2 plug’ and others ‘single plug’. Does anyone know what the difference is between these and when they changed?
Assuming I get one of these clocks, which is most likely, I thought that whilst the speedo is waiting to be fitted I could add some extra LED warning lights (trailer, abs, etc.). Has anyone ever done this or know of somewhere it has been done before?
The correct speedo head you need (p/n 193957033E) is available from here
http://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/bestand/index_e.html
it is the only head with the correct rating (1740) & was only fitted to the RHD UK Syncro
the 2wd speedometer heads are rated at 1505 for the 1050/1300 cc & 1540 for the 1600/1800 motors
I believe that this figure relates to the number of turns the speedo cable must make to record 1 mile,
or 1 kilometer as in a kilometer speedo as the relevent figures are 935 & 950.
