    Gents,

This is my 16V G60 engine, based around a 1.9L KR block with JE forged pistons.

When it is fully warmed up, it makes a worrying noise that almost appears in time with the camshaft sprocket.

Apologies for the fact that the videos are 3mb+ files that may need to be downloaded first – I may host them on YouTube later if needed.

Any ideas please anyone? I have ensured that the cambelt has not been overtightened.

To be spotted more easily this should really be here in the G60 forum. http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=50

I think the cambelt is rubbing against plate nr. 15

Your belt, at the intermediate-shaftpulley is touching plate 15….
Saw this happening with more 16v’s… doublecheck the bolt/nut from the
waterpump… it interlocks that plate… forgotten to fit perhaps ?
Now the plate is loose and hitting the cambelt… and it squeeks…

To check : undo part 4 (i know.. thats not easy…) and
get a little screwdriver… start engine, push metal plate towards
the engineblock and if the sqealing is gone… you’ve found your
    problem…..

    Greetings,

    Pascal

Thank you taking a listen and for your suggestion. I do believe that the cambelt is clear of the plate, but I shall certainly check again. Though when I’ve had the cambelt touch that plate in the past, the noise has never been a cyclic noise, like this one.

thats no prob… we’ll iron it out ;) it can’t be anything big.. not hearing very unwanted noises…
    Cam-belt-tentioner new ? Not been overtightened ?

    Cam-wheel any unbalance ?

Seeing already some wearmarks on the cambelt ? (on the side, on the inside)

Can you post some pictures from the side that we can see the belts clearly..
    And also the multibelt.

    Thanks Pascal, you’re very helpful.

Sadly I cannot look at this engine again until next weekend now, so I shall take some more pictures then and try out some of your suggestions.

The tensioner and cambelt are brand new, but they have been sitting on the engine for about two years.

Hmmm… you meantion ‘squealing’… but actually it isn’t really making a squeal noise, but it’s actually like a ‘whop… whop… whop…’ noise. Can you hear this?
