Driving into work the other morning, came off the M25 and thought it had gone black!! My head lights had failed, Dipped, Main & Driving lights all out. After a couple of minutes fiddling with the light switch they came back on! When I returned home in the evening they had packed up again.
“Ah!” said I, “I need a light switch!”. Two days later a new switch arrived from VW Heritage. Still doesn’t work. Hmm!
Yesterday I took the steering wheel off (bit difficult trying to use a breaker bar and hold the steering wheel at the same time) and removed the indicator and wiper stalks. I had another indicator stalk (with Cruise Control) plus another wiper stalk (with MFA) and thought I’d try them. Unfortunately the wiper stalk is an early type and don’t fit, but this is not too much of a promlem at the moment.
Anyway, I wired up the new indicator stalk, but the lights still did not work [!]. Time to dig out the Haynes manual and the German equivalent (So wirds gemacht). Neither seem to be that helpful and after several attempts I finally realised that Track 31 is the Earth [].
After pouring over these manuals for a good 90 minutes, I realised that I could test the fuse box for power from the light switch @ the Relay 10 Pin 2 position and dependent on the reading would tell me which connector or lead was playing up. So, armed with my trusty Multimeter, I went back to the car.
B*gg*r! Now the bloody lights work and I can’t get them not to work![!] I can’t use the car in case they pack up again, and I can’t find out where it’s gone wrong [!].
I packed up and went indoors to do some painting instead!
Anyone have any ideas?
Its probably the connector plug where power goes into the back of the switch.
btw there are 3 I think 3 different light switches, sure you got the correct one?
Yeah, used the number on the old one to order the new one. I’m slowly learning how to get around VWs parts []
I’ll check the light connector if I get time tonight.
