Thanks for your prompt replies
I’ve had a look at the relay. The one that clicks when I engage reverse is numbered 83 P/N 191 957 917. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t turn back off when I come out of reverse – it’ll only click ‘on’ but not ‘off’. To reset it, I have to turn the ignition off. Is this how it’s supposed to behave?
I tried to reverse up a slippery kerb…the first attempt, the relay clicked and it pulled me up. Second attempt (without resetting the relay) the front wheels just spun without 4×4. Third attempt (after I reset the relay)the relay clicked but the front wheels still spun and didn’t engage the 4×4
Is it the relay still? It’s too snowy outside to jack the car up to have a look at the rear diff.
its been superseeded to p/n 191 957 917A £22.10 inc vat
Thanks bud, I’ll get one ordered tomorrow and see if that works []
I’ve got also problems with 4wd in reverse.
Chris S – you’re writing “Check your under bonnet vacuum lines, esp the Light green one that disappears under the front left wing & your reversing light switch”
Do you know where is “light green” vacuum hose in MK3 (color?)? Do you’ve got (or anybody else)
any diagrams how look the vacuum lines in MK3 (especially those from rear axle)?
I add the reversing light switch is OK because the reverse bulb is shining.
P.s. I hope you will understand what I write.
Do you know where is “light green” vacuum hose in MK3 (color?)?
Sorry no I dont, but there are people on here with mk3 Syncro models that should be able to help.
I’ll check out my Mk3 this weekend when I can see in day light, When I had this problem it was the switch, solved it and recently the problem started again, I think it is another fault now.
There should be still the posting “clicking from the rear” with more details on this maybe from when I first raised it!
Thanks for all answers. I found a problem, I hadn’t 4wd in reverse.
It was quite silly problem.
There wasn’t any vacuum connected into the rear axle.
The vacuum hose sucked the air all the time. One of the symptom of that was I hadn’t enough good brakes.
When I connected the vacuum hose in the correct place, rear wheels started rotate on the snow.
Now I’ve got wholesome SYNCRO:).
Bringing this thread up again.
I had no 4wd in revers either.
My problems is not like mentioned in this thread.
Bought a Passat GT G60 syncro last winter, it had no 4wd in rewers.
Problem was the plastic selector shaft engaging the freewheel lock had broken, the eye was gone.
I thougt this was not very fishy because this tiny little plastic shaft engaging this every time its put in reverse.
Bought a Golf mk2 syncro, it had no 4wd in reverse, problem was first the plastic expanding pin securing the selector shaft to the lever was gone (noticed on this car that the eye on the selector shaft was much thicker/stronger than the new i got from VW).
Second problem here was that the rubber grommet on the vacuum control element was broken.
Replaced the vacuum control element with the one from the passat and fittet an new selector rod and expanding pin.
Then i had 4wd in reverse 2 times and then no more, there was a significant clunck from the rear diff second time i engaged reverse.
Took out vacuum control element again just to find out that eye on selector rod had snapped off.
Then there must be some mechanical fault inside the diff i thought.
Took out the diff an replaced with the one from the passat (this have been opened and inspected) fittet new selector rod and fitted the vacuum control element.
So for now i have 4WD in reverse.
But i dont like the sound when backing and turning steering wheel the clunk from the rear diff is significant.
Opened up the diff i tok out and inspected but cannot see any clear faults.
Have noticed that if i am moving the gearselector in reverse and pressing a little ekstra the reverse light goes off.
This maybe confuse the ecu to engage disengage to often so the selector rod gets strain its not made for.
So my question is if any one else had this selector rod snapping?
The Reversing “Clunk” is quite normal & nothing to worry about.
Anybody know where to get a substitute for the rubber grommet on the actuator?
Seems that it is not longer availble from VW.
Solved the problem with no 4wd in reverse, because i moved the vacuum actuator from the Golf syncro rear diff to the Passat rear diff when i changed to the Passat rear diff i also moved the problem.
The rod was still breaking after a couple of rewerse engaging, i took out the vacum actuator but connected it to vacum and electrical connection while i had it in the air with a person in the car engaging disengaging rewerse.
Then i could see thet it was not moving completely to end position at direction off.
disassembled the vacum actuator completely and found out that a white plastic thing inside the membrane housing was broken.
And was blocking the membrane to reach its end position.
I feel this was a sporadic problem because i had checked that the membrane reach its end positions before.
I think the item inside the membrane housing is not in use so i just removed it, i think its some kind of position switch.
And i can tell you that the clunk i heard from the rear diff before was not normal.
Now i can hear a weak clunk that feels more normal and have 4wd in reverse always.
Have uploaded photos to photobucket for those who intrested looking.
It was the left white plastic thing in this picture who was blocking.

I just checked with VW & unfortunately you are correct in that it (P/N 009 525 642) is no longer available from either VW or VW Classic parts.
However I may have a spare rear diff here, which may have one on, I will try & look for you this week end health permitting.
