Just a few quick q’s to put my mind at ease about a few unknowns with the syncro.
First of all, I know, from dealing with 4×4 Opel Calibras, that unevenly worn tires (front to rear) will cause problems w/ the 4×4 system. Is this also the case with the VW Syncro system? Do all tires need to be replaced at the same time?
Second, I have some nice, shiny Raceland Coilovers for the Syncro sitting in my hallway, is it safe to slam a syncro like w/ normal golf? If not, how low can I safely go?
Third, common trouble spots. What are they, what are symptoms, and how much does it cost to replace them?
Thanks in advance.

A) In an ideal world yes, but as long as you have the newer (more tread) tyres on the front you should be ok.
Q) Second, I have some nice, shiny Raceland Coilovers for the Syncro sitting in my hallway, is it safe to slam a syncro like w/ normal golf? If not, how low can I safely go?
A) if you “slam” a Syncro you get severe neggy camber on the rear wheels, the rear drive shafts are then not working at their optimum angle any longer either, this leads to what can only be described as interesting handling on corners, personally I would not lower any further than my car, as excessive lowering actually reduces cornering ability.
Q) Third, common trouble spots. What are they, what are symptoms, and how much does it cost to replace them?
A) Given the age of these cars rust is the main problem, + all the normal Golf 2 problems, + transfer box & rear diff problems, so please check your oil levels in the diffs as they probably have not been looked at since new.
Having said that these cars are in the main very reliable.
If you are going to top up the gear box oils, use this ,ttp://www.belesta.com/.
This oil is quite expencive but worth every penny.
A 2 litre bottle will do about 4 car gear boxes.
Use it in everything, i found better gear change, more mpg,and much quieter running gear.
