hi,i’m hoping to fit a golf mk4 cable change to my golf rallye to improve shifting,but i’ve hit a couple of problems that i hope you guys can help me with.
i have two options,both with problems;
i could use early mk4 stuff(pre-99),as it looks very simular to the original 02a/c selector.
would this selector(on top of gearbox)work with my original rallye shifter(gearchange inside car)and cables?
i think with this selector i could still use the 4 pin switch (for reverse light,5th gear/reverse diff freewheel)thats on top of the selector.is that correct?
or,i could use the later 02j mk4 (post 2000)shifter,cables and selector which gives a better shift, but has not got the 4 pin switch for the diff freewheel,only a 2 pin.is there a way of making this work?
i have parts for doing both options but my car is in a thousand bits(like most rallyes!)so testing with it in the car is immposible.i just want the best shift,with everything working as it should!
hope that makes some kind of sense,i pulling my hair out trying to sort this out!!
thanks in advance for any help.
regards,gareth.
Hi Gareth, to limit your options as they stand, you have to keep the original reverse switch as it controls the rear diff freewheel.
I would suggest you check your existing rallye gearchange, mine is original rallye and is easily as good as a late mk4 change.
I would suggest you check everything is in top condition before trying other change setups, I’m not even sure the throws are exactly the same.
Have you checked the cables are easy to move when disconnected and the end connections are not worn? could posibly be seized or worn selectors in the box or even a dragging clutch, seized clutch release arm or leaking clutch hydraulics. these will all cause problems changing gear. changing the gearbox oil for sythetic can help a lot too.
the only mod I can suggest is fitting the weighted shift arm as fitted to the later G60 Passat, it makes the change a little slower but much smoother.
cheers Mike
thanks mike.i have actually taken your advice and stuck with the original set up.
cheers,gareth.
