HI I HAVE 1990 4DR SYNCRO, NO ABS. I AM HAVING A REPEATED KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM THE NEARSIDE REAR (I THINK[?]) IT GETS FASTER AS THE CAR GETS FASTER. I’VE TAKEN THE DRUM OFF AND THE BEARINGS SEEM FINE I’VE TURNED THE DRIVE SHAFT BY HAND AND I CAN FEEL RESISTANCE PART WAY THROUGH EACH TURN, IS THERE ANY PROBLEMS THAT USUALLY OCCUR WITH THESE? ALSO DOES ANYONE HAVE A STEP BY STEP GUIDE WITH PHOTOS OF HOW TO REMOVE THE SHAFT AS I HAVE ANOTHER DONOR SYNCRO WHICH I CAN USE BITS FROM. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APRECIATED. SORRY FOR POOR SPELLING[]REGARDS DARREN
STOP SHOUTING! We are not deaf []
If you look at the adjustable rear axle thread
(here http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/data/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1671 ) you will see what you need to remove, which is the large outer driveshaft nut(Sits in the outerside centre of the brake drum) and the 6 inner driveshaft bolts, you will be able to wriggle out the driveshaft for inspection.
sorry i always forget to take caps off, my bad thanks for your help.
hi due to having a spare syncro for parts my other half has told me to get rid of the bodt of the car so i must remove all the running gear and engine, is there any how to’s for removing all the parts.regards darren
Just keep undoing bolts till things fall off. []
thats my usual process of elimination.[] thanks chris
have taken one rear shaft off with out any problems hoorah. thanx for the thread.[]
btw, Do not roll the car about on its wheels when the drive shafts have been removed, as you will destroy the wheel bearings.
will do thanx
Hopefully you mean wont do? []
yep[]
changed the n/s/r shaft lastnight and to my surprise (not) it wasn’t the fault so i will repeat the procedure for the other side as i founf that the drum on the o/s was stuck last time, i may aswell change that aswell. i got my other half to drive while i listened in the back, i felt alot of vibration and the knocking noise on the o/s, iam sure it was the otherside last time but hey never mind will perservere.[8]
I hate to say this but it could be your rear diff.[]
i have put it on a ramp in my lunch hour, there still seems to be noise coming from the nearside wheel so iam gona change the wheel bearing first. do you know how the hub comes apart and to get the bearing out and pics. also if it is the dreaded diff then do you know how to remove these as i have the spare one on my other syncro.[] regards darren
