So I bought this T3 Syncro in Poland. Last winter. It was covered in snow but looked to be in good shape, so I shipped it over. Yesterday was the first day I could have a good look at it. Most of the drive assy is missing. I have a diesel RWD. Don’t get me wrong, it is (was) a Syncro – has the switchgear and all the body parts it should have but ‘for reasons of economy’ some previous owner had the front drive shafts, the front differential and the main drive shafts removed – and lost.
Therefore I shall be looking to buy some parts!
Also, is a 1986 Diesel have a fuel pump inside the tank?
Cheers
Alan
As you probably know in the US the T3 was called Vanagon!
Before anyone can help we need to know the engine & gearbox codes as the front axle type is dependent on these, there were a multitude of incompatable with each other gearboxes & front diffs fitted to the T3 Syncro,
It is very important to identify the correct part needed, as fitting the wrong one may get you 50 feet before something expensive breaks and you have to do it all over again!
I am sure that these links will be of great help to you.

Chris, Are there numbers stamped anywhere? The engine is the original 4 pot diesel, as is the g/box.. but it’s better to be safe than sorry! Where should I be looking?
Cheers

Good Question, for the motor it should be on the top front of the block between cylinders 3 & 4
the gearbox I don’t know
this may help http://www.loam.org/vw/Vanagon/VanagonProTraining/86Vanagon/
Sorry for the delay in replying! Bronchitis. Can’t see any numbers from above. Has been in shop to sort out starting probs – it was the battery – not powerful enough… New 660CCA and hey presto it starts!
Will clamber underneath with torch and poke about. More as I know it.
