    Hi all, just put a deposit down on a MK3 2.9 VR6.

It’s an early one on a “M” reg, with 88’000 on the clock. I am buying from a friend who has looked after it for the last 10 years.

I have had a good look around it and seems solid enough. What are the common problems I should be looking for, and what upgrades from the newer models can i retro fit. I am also stripping my MK3 GTI, its exactly the same just a GTI (same colour) but right hand drive.

    Few pics below.

    My old MK3 G60 (conversion).

This is the car I will be getting soon.

And just a Photo shop of the car with my Audi A8 wheels.

    Comments welcome.

The main problem(s) with the VR6 Syncro are the front transfer box & rear diff, not because they are weak or not up to the job in any way, only because they are so expensive & difficult to find if you ever need to replace either of them.

(the VR6 uses different ratios in the transfer box & rear diff to the 4 cylinder Syncro models and they are only interchangable as a pair)

But with only 88,000 miles on the clock you should have no worries about that for a long time yet!

Are they expensive to rebuild, or is it better to replace.

When the transfer box bevel gears let go its like a hand grenade going off, and so it has to be completely replaced, usually along with the gearbox, which will also be full of metal splinters, but dont worry as it does not happen very often!
