    Hi all,

A while back I had my G60 Syncro’s transfer box opened up and inspected at the same time as the gearbox was rebuilt. I have got the transfer box sitting on the bench at the moment with the long gearbox shaft inserted fully, and I am puzzled by the fact that when I turn the flanged / splined gearbox shaft, there is no movement at all in the propshaft drive flange.

The only time I have any kind of movement is when I turn the doughnut drive flange; this causes the splined shaft for the gearbox to rotate. But it’s only due to light viscous friction: if I hold the shaft, I can just keep rotating the other shaft. There seems to be no physical connection between them.

The transfer box is the type that shares its oil with the gearbox.

Am I being stupid and missing something?

    Thanks

    Trev

That is normal as the front wheel drive is taken (as is the 2WD) through the planetary gears in the crown wheel/pinion differential while the drive for the rear wheels is taken directly from the crown wheel carrier, this link will explain it.

Thanks Chris. I had watched that video before, and even then I was still convinced there was a problem. Then I looked at the transfer box again and the penny dropped. I feel stupid now!
