    Hi there!

I currently own a 91 GTI 16V and I’m collecting bits and pieces to convert it to Syncro – I know it’s not an easy task, so for now I’m collecting all the stuff needed [;)]
I got the 02C(IIRC) box(incl. pedal box with clutch pump and shifter with cables), prop shafts, rear beam, differential, trailing arms, axes and so on out of a wrecked Passat G60 Syncro. I’ll cut the floor and boot section just in case I need something out of there or couldn’t find a Golf Syncro shell.
I have read that I need a relay – 83 – but I couldn’t find one in the Passat. Can the Passat Syncro came with different relay? Do I need something else from the Passat? Does the Golf G60 Syncro and regular Golf Syncro shells differs because of the gear linkage – cable vs rod shifter?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Cheers,
    kyky

The Passat Syncro rear floor is completely different than the Golf 2 Syncro floor,
The Passat Syncro has a rear beam that would go right through the middle of the petrol tank & the spare wheel well on the Golf 2 Syncro.

The Golf 2 2wd rear floor is also very different than the Golf 2 Syncro, as is the petrol tank & filler neck.

Have a look on the for sale forum here you may find what you need.

I’m completely aware of the difference between 2WD and Syncro Golf. I know that the Passat rear beam is OK, but the mounting plates for the golf are different. I’ll cut the Passat bottom because otherwise is going to be scraped.
I don’t know if there is any difference in the tunnel of Syncro G60(cable shifter) and ordinary Syncro(rod shifter) and particularly the height.
I have ordered some body panels for the conversion – the boot left and right connection plates ~18eu each, but the other body panels are pricey. The other reason I prefer finding a Syncro donor car is because of the carpet, fuel tank and other small pieces that I’ll need.
Tomorrow I’ll post some pictures on the things I have at the moment :)

    Cheers,

All 3 rear axle Differential mounts are different on the Passat.

All the Golf 2 Syncro models use the same (high) tunnel as does the 2wd G60 Golf.

Am I understanding that right or am i being a numpty? Can the std 2wd G60 be converted into 4wd by just fitting the syncro running gear without having to chop bits out of the car bodywork?

Unfortunately its only the syncro style high tunnel & not the Syncro rear floor fitted to the 2wd G60

I am breaking a Golf Syncro for my own conversion so a few bits are available:

Carpets, new discs, drums (with new bearings), front bearings, pads and shoes. Also rear diffs and boxes.

PM me if you need any of it.

What colour & condition are the carpets in?

but wont you need them to fit to the high tunnel that you should really weld in along with the rear floorpan?

Hi Chris. Standard grey front carpets and black in the boot area.

I don’t think I need them for my Corrado conversion do I?

I thought the correct answer for “how do I convert my _____________ to a syncro?” was:

    “LOL!”

Wouldn’t it be easier/cheaper to just get a Syncro?

Yes thats very true, but the MKII RHD version only came with 4 doors, 90 BHP & a rod change 020 type gearbox.

How hard is it to change an engine and transmission compared to all the welding, cutting, and fabrication involved in making a 2wd into a Syncro?

I vote to find a syncro shell, and start from there.
