does anyone know if these are the same length as the rallye ones? i have just bought a pair out of desperation. hope i don’t need new wishbones now..
passat is wide track.
DH managed to get the rallye specific shaft in the UK off the shelf from a recon shop. for less money than some ebay muppet wanted for a 2nd hand one out of a crashed car
any idea which recon shop? i think i can use the passat ones if i get a new pair of wishbones and steering arms, but it sounds like a lot less hassle just to get the rallye one.
The Passat front shafts are 25mm too long, but as you already said you can use them in combination with the Passat triangles and steering arms this gives a nice 2 inch increase in the front track width.
fingers crossed i’ve just found a company that remanufactures, they say they can supply recon rallye shafts for not mucho alotta bucks. wide track would be good but spacers are cheaper! ps are you still able to send me over that cable shifter chris?
If your new found company does a decent job, would you mind posting thier info and some pics of the reman?
turns out they want the original shafts in order to remanufacture them. a bit of a dead end there then. might have to go wide track after all..
or does anyone know of somewhere who shortens driveshafts? is this expensive?
found a pair of rallye driveshafts, remanufactured, for £160 from carpartsonline. they turned up yesterday, but for a 2wd with 90mm flange! annoyed. will just go out and wide track it then.
sorry that should read carpartsdirect. based in derby. not impressed. have just had to make a five hour drive to return them.
That is a typical example of how little car part suppliers & part monkeys actually know about our cars, VW employees included.
well MOST VW employees anyway! []
sadly too true. the parts man down at the local vw in stratford on the other hand, couldn’t have been more helpful. sometimes these guys really want to see a great old car kept on the roads. shame so many people just want old cars scrapped so we can all drive around in modern boxes.
i’ve been looking on clubgti and the consensus there is that mk3 golf 4 stud will be fine, as the lower wishbone balljoints will fit the post ’87 hub carriers with no probs, and is wide track. mk3 passat (86 to 92 i think) will also do.
i can get the wishbones no trouble, but does anyone know where i can get the track rods? most suppliers only seem to do the track rod ends..
1990 Passat
Track rod left P/N 357 422 803A
Track rod right P/N 357 422 804A
I have them listed at 100 euros ouch(each)
or try a scrapyard or failing that as usual I have some here!
yes, looking at vw prices always gives me sympathy pains in my wallet.
how soon do you think you could get them here chris? also how much are you looking for.
so far i’ve only been able to find mk3 golfs in the scrapyards, and it is apparently a bad idea to mix passat shafts with golf wishbones. maybe some difference in axle position? anyway i’m going to need passat wishbones, but i can get these off the shelf at gsf. going to be building the engine this weekend, fitting it next week along with the gearbox conversion. driving to helsinki on the 7th so it’s going to be tight!
