I’ve got an(other) oil leak from the golf – this time it’s what appears to be gearbox oil, from somewhere on the driver’s side in the region of the CV joint.
I’m guessing it’s the CV Flange Seal (though to be honest I haven’t looked yet) – has anyone done a replacement of one of those on the syncro? Can it be done in situ, and is it a complete pain (ie requires vw tools etc)…?
Oh, and does the syncro replacement method run something like this one?
Thats exactly the way to do it, it quite easy but awkward to do with the box in situ.
VW repair kit for the 90mm Flange is 020 498 085E
VW repair kit for the 100mm Flange is 020 498 085G
So no VW tools required? I don’t have a welder… []
Also, any way of telling the 90/100 flanges apart without taking it apart and measuring them? I’d rather get the bits up front…!
Aha…
Take a piece of string and wrap it around the inner CV joint, right where it fits into the flange…. mark the string where it meets itself, so you know how far it is around the CV joint. Measure the string.
A bit over 11″ (11.13) and it is a 90mm CV/flange.
Just under 12.5″ (12.36) and it is a 100mm CV/flange.
<translated to metric>
Just under 283mm and it is a 90mm CV/flange.
About 314mm and it is a 100mm CV/flange.
The only tool that you really need is a pair of circlip pliers
something like this set will be ideal for all your circlips
Had a look at this today and it’s definitely the flange seal – oil coming out of a split in the CV boot! Cheap kit though, and I think I can do it in situ – fortunately I think I have a CV kit lying around somewhere! Just need the ~£15 seal kit…
There should not be oil coming out of the CV boot, if the flange seal was leaking oil it would go directly to the outside of the CV joint & also drip down the box casing,
what I think you have is the CV joint grease coming through the split in the boot, as the only way that gearbox oil could get inside the boot is for the center cap seal to have a leak (which is extremely unlikely)

Had a closer look – the CV joint has a split in the boot, out of which gearbox oil is coming. I’m 100% it’s ‘box oil – looks like the CV grease washed out a while ago… So yeah, might just be the center cap, so I’ve got a kit for that and a new boot coming today, job for next week I think!
I sorted this yesterday – took the CV joint off and replaced the centre cap – no prizes for guessing why it was leaking:
