This is mainly a post to chris but feel free to add your input. I think i have decided to ditch the idea of fitting the 2.0l engine into my golf syncro and iam going to stick with the 1.8 8v however i want to put a crossflow head on the car and i believe you had one at one point(chris) is this still forsale and for how much? also how much can be skimmed from one of these heads before you get valve and piston collision if the std valves are left in? also would the 34/34 carb you were going to sell me be ok for this set-up or is there a better option i.e bike carbs or twin webers and the like. my aim is to get the bestest punchiest 1.8 8v that i can build i have seen some of the old school guys cars with similar set-ups and they still boasted good and surprising performance figures any info would be helpfull as the project is fully back on track after a seperation[] thanks in advance guys
wouldn’t go giving the head a heavy skim to try and increase compression, 10:1 is raseing it is to much effort for the gain. and if you blow it then it’ll be needing a new head that can be very anoying if said head has had lots of work done to it. 32/34, 34/34 or 32/36 won’t feed it adequately. to give an idea the 32/34 will support about 130 bhp at that point gains are to be had by replacing with something bigger also it would be awkward to fit to your enigne, your best bet is going to be bike carbs they are vastly superior to Webber’s, in that they seem to hold tune much better and flow much nicer, 40mm bike carbs with flow like a 45mm Webber doce’s at full throttel yet the lower rpm part throttel performance is not sacrificed to anywhere near the same degree,
If you’re taking the head off then you might as well swap out the block for a 2.0 motor. An AGG block from a Toledo 2.0 Sport will give you a crank sensor that will allow easy installation of Megasquirt, should you wish later on.
http://www.jnlracing.co.uk breathed on my ABA head and for £250 they seem to have got good torque characteristics, but you need to consider that with that work you will out-flow anything designed for a counterflow head, so bike carbs, as suggested by Danny would do you well for a starter. With the 2.0 block plus bike throttlebodies and Megasquirt you’ll have a seriously pokey motor.
To be honest though, a standard ABF motor will see all that without being touched.
