Thanks, I’ll get myself to a printer tomorrow, it helps to see it on paper! I fitted some gti seats in, which will help me stay in my seat on corners!
One thing I forgot to ask you Chris was did VW ever fit an arm rest to any mk3 golf? I really need an arm rest in the middle, now I’m driving on the left, my right arm hates not resting on the window!
Hi Guys,
I’ve just joined the forum in the last few minutes from France.
Really interested in your topic as I’m having the same reverse gear problem.
Bought my 89 CL syncro 10 years ago and was told there was no 4×4 in reverse on early syncro models!! Then, 10 years later I fall upon your website with all the info I needed!!
Believe me I’m no mechanic but I’ve found the green tube that comes from the back axxel into the engine bay. Problem is the tube ends behind the solonoid just behind the brake reservoir not connected to anything. Also I cannot find the three spheres vacuum part you mention. Is it visible above the front wheel or from inside the bonnet.
Cheers
You have to unbolt the outer wing to get at the 3 ball res.

the non return valve nr 4 in the drawing is connected to the inlet manifold by a further length of vacuum pipe,
btw do you have a carburettor or injection model?
as the manifold connection differs between the two
Thanks for that Chris,
Mine is the carb model. I might have to wait for warmer temperatures before I have a look under the wing. Is the non return valve easy to see?
By the way, bent U nederlands of engels?
Yay fixed!!!!
Finally no clicking, although not tested 4×4 in reverse as can’t find any where suitable at the moment.
But I’m confident!!
The last part which I took apart (probably should of been the first) was the little switch on the gearbox linkage,
So it seems that it was only a connection all cleaned up and now working.
Well I’ve learnt a little more about things syncro wise so that’s a plus.
Thanks Chris for your advise. I’ll be travelling over to berlin sometime in July probably so might take you up on your offer and pop past!

Here is the diagram for the carb model vacuum line routing
The non return valve is the black/white fitting on the black vacuum pipe just after where it comes of the inlet manifold, top left (ish)
There is a second non return valve in the green pipe on the bulkhead under the bonnet, (which btw is actually green on the car as well)
