cable change

I’ve had a gander through the search function but can’t find much on it. my gearbox has the dreaded crunch into second and instead of getting it rebuilt how involved is going cable change? i.e. what’s needed? and the likelihood of getting the parts lol

i’m in the middle of doing this at the moment, along with a new engine. the biggest ballache is finding the right driveshafts i think. try ebay.de there are loads of bits on there..
budget on about £200-300 for a gearbox with transfer box, £100 for a cable clutch setup if you’re not going hydraulic, £300 for a clutch and flywheel, £100 for the driveshafts, £150 for passat or golf suspension parts if you have to use passat or golf 3 driveshafts, and £50 for a cable gearshifter. so about a grand, but a lot of that i’ve bought new. best bet is to find a rallye breaking (unlikely very soon). take your time getting the bits together cheap and you should be able to half that figure.

2nd gear crunch is not a sing of impending doom. its one of those things 020 boxes do, if you put some better gear oil in it may even go away. also bear in mind that rodchange syncro boxes are plentyfull and cheep.

gear oil wise, redline mlt is kill or cure. it stops the crunch but if your oil seals are poor it gets out.

some box rebulders recomend atf but im unsure about that or just up the thickness a notch.

btw if you want the free box its about to get demoted to outside

if it kills it then i’ll be needing a new one, in which case i will take the free one. However i dnt get payed till friday and im changing headgasket over the weekend so i won’t be able to pick it up at least till a weeks time?

I put it in my gear box and transfer box as it was very noisy and it made a big difference. it is also thick for those bad oil seals, it is a bit expensive but you only use a tiny amount.you should find it changes gear better and give you more mpg.[]
